Converting Visitors to Buyers

So, you have made it into the search engines and getting some respectable results using pay per click. This, combined with an offline marketing campaign is driving visitors to your site. You know this because you have a decent web statistics generated from the ISPs webserver logfiles which will show you not only how many visits you have had, but exactly what they typed into the search engines or which site they visited before they got to your site.

This is an essential to monitor the effeciveness of any search engine optimisation or paid for advertising you have been doing.

Interpreting your Statistics
Before you embark on your webshop, you should have an idea of what you want to achieve in terms of sales and profit. Sales in GBP and Profit in GBP and/or % terms are key measures (or metrics) of your success. Some sites may also use other measures like these:

Goods stats are worth paying for
  • Number of Visitors - possibly one of the most useful measures for comparing your sites with others on a level ground, although the number of visitors you get will be related to the industry you are in and shouldn't be seen as the be all and end all figure. Also, don't confuse the number of visitors with real success (money in the bank!). 1 buyer is worth 10,000 idle browsers.

  • Number of Hits - possibly one of the worst measures and definately the most misunderstood. Hits are a simple count of the number of elements in a page that has been viewed. We host sites which have been not been built by us and each page could have over 100 graphics. One view of the page by one person will result in 100 hits. Some site we build have less than 10 graphics. This makes it very hard to compare sites, and very easy to bump up your hits if you wanted to!
  • Page Views - The number of pages viewed. Quite simple, but again very much realated to what you site is about. If you are running a review site or an information site, then this might give you some indication of how much your visitors like your site and enjoy looking around. If you are selling a single product or service and your site is small, there is no point looking at page views as a measure.
  • Conversion Rate - The number of visitors against the number of orders. Extremely site specific and this will give you an idea of how your marketing strategy is working. The ideal is 100%, or every visit results in a sale. Stats vary widely by industry. The higher the %age the more accurate amd effective your marketing is. Anything over 2% is considered good, although the more niche your product, the better it should be.
